Los Angeles Several suspects are still on the loose after three people were killed and 12 injured in a gunfight at a birthday party in Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday after an argument broke out at a party in a restaurant, broadcaster KABC said.

Police said that three individuals left the party, before returning with guns and opening fire. Shots were also returned from party guests.

Detectives were searching for at least three suspects in the shooting, Peter Whittingham from the Los Angeles Police department told the Los Angeles Times.

Police took into custody two ‘persons of interest’ – a man and a woman – but neither has been formally arrested, the newspaper reported.

‘We have street names for these suspects but we don’t who the killers are yet,’ he said. ‘The people shot either don’t know the killers or aren’t telling us what they do know.’

Whittingham said it may have been more than a simple argument that erupted at the party, with police not ruling out a gang-related motive.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a statement about the incident on Saturday saying action needed to be taken ‘against (the) easy access to firearms and the thoughtless indiscriminate murderous use of them.’

‘We cannot tolerate these tragedies multiplying in communities across America,’ the statement said.
