A 19-year-old man was shot in a southeast Austin neighborhood late Thursday night, dying from his injuries at the hospital.

Officers say someone in the 6600 block of Marble Creek Loop, not far from the intersection of McKinney Falls Parkway and East William Cannon Drive, called police at 11:28 p.m. about several men shooting.

Callers told police that a man was dragged by others into a waiting vehicle that then sped away.

Officers arriving to the house found fresh blood and multiple caliber shell casings at the scene, but no victim. Other officers responding to the area saw three juveniles walking two blocks from the shooting. One of them, a 16-year-old, threw a T-shirt and what police describe as a large-caliber handgun off to the side of the road.

One of the juveniles told police that he was shot at first.

Another call at 11:51 p.m. alerted officers that a shooting victim, identified as Quintin Vargas, had arrived to South Austin Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 12:21 a.m.

Detectives believe Vargas and others drove to the 16-year-old’s house to rob him of guns and narcotics. Police say a firefight began and Vargas was hit.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to the call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
