Authorities conducting the probe of Saturday night shooting said Mateen was targeting gays. the officials said in addition to terrorism this is a hate crime.

The Orlando police officials who are leading the investigation along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation also believe he is a part of radical Islamic movement, although they are not sure that if it was an organised attack or if he was a lone wolf. Authorities also believe that Mateen specifically targeted a gay club.

Mateen’s father was quoted by NBC news where he said, “This has nothing to do with religion”. He says, two months ago in Miami his son became angry after seeing two men kissing, and he speculates that could have triggered his decision to kill.
