A female hiker has survived being stranded in the New Zealand wilderness for nearly a month.

The Czech woman, aged in her thirties, was discovered by rescue teams sheltering in a remote hut.

She told authorities her partner died when he fell down a cliff, on one of the hiking tracks four weeks ago.

She was taken to hospital suffering from mild frostbite and hypothermia.
