A cargo plane has crashed through a fence into a road after skidding off a runway at Bergamo’s Orio al Serio international airport in Italy.

The two crew members escaped unharmed and there were no injuries on the ground, Italy’s air regulator the National Agency for Civil Aviation (ENAC) said.

The airport in the northern Lombardy region was temporarily closed after the smash involving the Boeing 737-400 aircraft, which belongs to DHL Couriers.

Dramatic pictures show the jet’s nose in the road after the aircraft went through a barrier, and later the plane’s belly lying across the road in front of vehicles.

It is understood the plane, which had flown from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, was trying to land during bad weather when it overshot the runway at around 4am on Friday.

ENAC said some flights to and from the airport were rescheduled to Milan’s Malpensa Airport.

Ryanair announced with ‘regret’ that it was cancelling ‘some flights’ due to the smash.
